Artist David Powell explores traditional folk tales and language to stage an experimental multimedia work paying homage to historic celebratory gathering spaces.
Fusing traditional and modern craft, weaving and welding, fire and water, to connect the past and the present, this world and the otherworld. David uses woven willow steel and light to create large-scale sculptural forms whose antecedents are both standing stones, wooden pier timbers and the human figure.
Using the spoken word and diffused light the tall slender structures will form a gateway, a bridge between this world and the otherworld a liminal space, a Halloween gateway for the Galoshans.
David is an artist maker inspired by landscape form and place, with an interest in ritual and celebration David creates time based performance works and sculptural constructs of abstract and figurative form.
A self-taught weaver inspired and influenced by landscape form and place, David uses the natural colours and the line of the willow rod to draw and define three dimensional forms utilising both steel, and willow to create bespoke lanterns and artworks
